Kaspersky developing super-secure operating system

Earlier this month Eugene Kaspersky confirmed in a blog posting that his IT security company, Kaspersky Lab, is developing a new super-secure operating system for industrial control systems that will be “exploit-proof” — meaning safe from viruses, malware and cyber-attacks — to protect critical facilities such as nuclear reactors, power stations, telecommunication systems, transportation systems, and financial systems. The operating system will be designed to prevent break-ins and won’t execute third-party software or unauthorized applications.

To Kaspersky’s statement that the company’s new operating system is not intended for applications like “playing Half Life, editing your vacation videos, or blathering on social media”, I can only cheer and say “bravo!” Won’t it be great to have a secure operating system for routine business use, and stop squandering cycles and money on all those essential but wasteful antivirus, security and system diagnostic products? Kaspersky might even find that SMEs are an unexpected but lucrative market for his new OS.

Eugene Kaspersky’s original blog posting is here.

For those who may doubt this is possible, Kaspersky has a lot of credibility. Kaspersky Lab describes itself as “an innovator in IT security (that) provides effective digital security solutions for consumers, SMBs and large enterprises”. The company claims to operate in almost 200 countries and territories, provide protection for over 300 million users worldwide, and was recently ranked by research firm IDC as one of the world’s top four vendors of security solutions for endpoint users. If you’re interested in investing, note that Kaspersky is the largest privately-held vendor of endpoint protection solutions.
